Owners with the above system cannot fill their
fuel tanks to the maximum capacity.
Fuel tank filler neck flapper door will not
allow filling tank to its brim.
C.A.R.B. regulations influenced the design
of the BMW fuel tank, as described in previous
Service Informations sent to you. The flapper
door is positioned to limit filling capacity
specifically to allow for the expansion of
the fuel as it becomes warm.
The filler neck flapper door is a vital part
of this design and must not be removed. If
the flapper door is removed and the fuel level
is filled to the brim, it is possible that
fuel may travel through the fuel vent tube/hose
and into the crankcase. The fuel can then
mix with the oil and engine damage could occur.
Please notify your customers not to tamper
with this system. They will be in violation
of C.A.R.B. regulations and subject to fines.
BMW NA will not warranty engine defects on
motorcycles found to have this flapper door
removed or tampered with. Please note the
VIN and owner’s name of motorcycles found
with systems which have been tampered with,
‘and report them to our Warranty Department.
Very truly yours,
BMW o, NORTH V me.
