RE: Driveshaft Oil
December 1, 1971
We have received various reports that customers experienced
oil transferring from the driveshaft housing to the rear
drive housing.
We have found that in many of these cases the suspect seal,
part number 33 12 1 230 356, is not defective, but that the
oil seeps along the splines of the driveshaft pinion and
around the threads of the seal retaining ring.
To correct this condition, proceed as ยฃallows:
1. Remove rear drive assembly.
2. Using tools #256 and #253, remove the coupling hub and
the seal retaining ring. (If the seal retainer is very
tight, apply heat to the housing.)
Apply a suitable, non-hardening silicone sealer such as G.E.
or Dow clear silicone on the splines of the shaft and on the
threads of the retaining ring. Reinstall and torque 24mm
h~ad nut to f75 foot pounds. Fill driveshaft housing with
100cc SAE 90 Hypoid gear lube.
