( ( Service-InformationM otorcycle BMW NA Service Department Group: 23 Gear Box June, 1992 23 009 92 (2442) Gear Box Output Shaft Seal – RIOOGS/PO/MRo dels For USA Only With the introduction of the BMWPa ralever rear swing arm, the gear box output seal was revised – P/N 23 12 I 338 514. (Review S. I. 00 053 88 – September, 1988). The seal is a new pattern which must be pre-shaped before installation or it will be damaged by the speedometer drive gear. Install this seal dry, with the contact surface of the seal tapering inside, to accept insertion of the output flange. In addition, the small vent in the gear box cover must be blocked (paralever model only) with 1209 sealer in order to prevent oil transfer from the gear box to the swing arm. This seal must not be used on models that have oil in the swing arm, i.e., R80 – RlOORTw, hich use seal P/N 23 12 I 232 681. Very truly yours, BMWof North America, Inc.
