RE: MODIFICATIONS TO 5-SPEED GEARBOX
Dear Dealer:
During 1982, gearboxes have been modified to improve gear
shift action.
Starting with gearbox number Z or ZSA 56 476, all 5-speed
gearboxes (with or without kick starte~) have a modified
selector mechanism to improve the selection of gears.
Gearboxes with the new shift mechanism can be identified
by a green paint spot near the air cleaner housing surface.
All 5-speed gearboxes ca~ .be modified by installing the
following: โข โข โข
.2 cam. discs ,
1 shift pawlยท
1 torsion spring
available ยทas a kit, under part number 23 31 9 056 150 ..
When installing, pleยทase refer to the description in the
workshop manual.
Starting with gearbox No. Z or ZSA 58225, the meshing angle
of the helical-cut input gears and 5th gear was changed
to 17.5 degrees. This angle helps to cut down noise and
permits the gears to withstand higher loads.
New gearboxes containing both the modified shift mechanism
and the new gears are marked with a blue paint spot instead
of the green one.
Helical-cut gears with the modified 17.5ยฐ meshing angle are
marked with a star or cross.

Please make sure during gearbox repair that only gears
with the same meshing angle are installed.
If gears are not cut at the same angle, the gears will
generate excessive noise and will be subject to premature
wear and failure.
Color identification marks will only be used for a
transitional period of a few months.
Sincerely,
BM~ OF NrRTH
