Service-Information ~ BMW MOTORRAD GMBH Motorcycles – R 100 RS Munich, May 79 Technical Group: Engine 11 0 1 0 7 8 ( 1 O6OR) – For U.S.A. and Canada Only – Subject: Oil Cooler for BMW R 100 RS Dear Dealer, Installation of the oil cooler ensures that the oil remains within the most favorable temperature range even if the engine is working hard for long periods. The oil cooler is controll.ed by a thermostat in Ehe oil 0 filt~r can. Thi~ thermo~tat opens, at approximately 80 C (17g F) oie temperature, and is fully i open by approximately 110 C (230 F). When carrying out work which involves separating the components of the lubricating oil circuit (hoses, oil cooler, ( oil changes including filter element when engine is warm – but not engine oil changes without filter renewal) note the following instructions. Before adding engine oil, remove the M 6 x 10 mm hex bolt from the oil filter cover and insert a temporary screw BMW part number 11 42 1 335 394 with a sealing ring BMW part number 07 11 9 963 034 in its place. The total oil content is 2.5 liters (2.6 US quarts, 4.4 Imp. pints) including oil cooler and hoses. Bleeding the oil cooler After adding the engine oil, pull off both spark plug caps and attach adapters (Beru P.P l buppressor elements), or else parts of the waterproof sealing may burn through. Switch on the ignition and turn the engine over with the starter. Important: After this, the temporary screw must be removed and the hex bolt inserted with a new sealing ring, or else the thermostat will not operate. This could lead to serious engine damage (failure to reach normal operating temperature, high oil pressure in cooler during cold starts). During the 10,000 mile (15,000 km) oil change including filter renewal, the oil in the oil cooler must also be changed. This is done by dism:mtling the oil filter can and inserting the temporary screw (to cpen the valve so that the oil drains out). After the oil has drained out, insert a new filter element and assemble the oil filter can with the temporary screw. Note: the oil filter elements are of longer pattern – BMW part number 11 42 l 335 385 – when an oil cooler is installed. Add oil and bleed the oil cooler as described above. For subsequent installation to the R 100 RS model a complete conversion kit is available: BMW part number 11 42 l 335 396 and can be obtained by the usual spare part ordering procedure. The conversion kit does not include the special engine fairing center section developed for machines with an oil cooler. Please keep ยทthis in mind when ordering, or else it will not be possible to install the oil cooler. The modified center section of the fairing is available under the following BMW part numbers: 46 63 l 237 662 silver metallic 46 63 l ? , ., — I 964 gold metallic 46 63 l 237 965 primer finish Subsequent installation is also possible on /5, /6 and /7 (R 60/7- R 100 S) models. We will be forwarding full details shortly in a separate Service Information bulletin. Yours ยทJery sincerel.:.i, BMW MOTORRAD GMBH ,Munich i.V. i.V. ‘ (
