The following vehicle identification numbers indicate the start of BMW motorcycles which must meet 1978 emissions standards: R80/7 Rl00/7 RlOOS RlOORS V.I.N. V. I.N. V.I.N. V.I.N. 6 124 485 6 147 411 6 163 343 6 183 239 Emissions Service Procedures Exhaust emissions standards can only be maintained by proper adherence to service procedures as detailed in the following publications, copies of which are enclosed. 1. 2. Repair Manual Change Sheets Enclosed are eight lilue sheets which contain all c:hanges in specifications and service procedures relating to emissions controlled BMW motorcycles. These sheets must be inserted in your Repair Manual (Part No. 01 51 9 599 041) for R60/7 through RlOORS. The original sheets of the manual should be retained as the specifications listed on these sheets still apply to BMW motorcycles manufactured before January 1, 1978. Service Bulletin 11 005 78 (1040R) “Maintenance of the Exhaust Emission Control System This service bulletin should be studied by all shop personnel involved in servicing BMW motorcycles and then filed in your Service Bulletin Binder for future reference. Emissions Tester Part of the service procedures leading to correct emission standards involves the setting of the CO (Carbon Monoxide) emissions level at idle. This test requires the use of an emissions tester capable of determining the percent(%) of carbon monoxide present in the exhaust gases. At the present time only CO has to be EXCLUSIVE U.S. IMPORTERS OF BMW MOTORCYCLES 8-78-14 NS Page 2 checked, but a dual instrument, measuring both CO (Carbon Monoxide) and HG (Hydrocarbons) is a requirement in the next few years. In addition to setting proper emissions levels, these instruments can be very useful to the mechanic in determining ignition irregularities, oil consumption, blowby, and leaking valves as well as insuring more accurate carburetion adjustment. BMW Limited Emission Control Systems Warranty All emission related devices on “Emissions Motorcycles” are covered under a separate limited warranty statement for a period of five (5) years or 30,000 (18,641 miles) kilometers, whichever occurs first. A copy of this limited warranty is enclosed for reference. Service Schools Effective iunnediately Butler & Smith, Inc. Service Schools in Norwood, New Jersey and Compton, California will incorporate information on Emissions Controls.
