– For U.S.A. and Canada Only –
Subject: Maintenance of Emission Contr.ol Systems – 1981 Models
Applicable emission standards for the 1981 motorcycles amount to
5 g/km HC and 12 g/km CO.
The pulse air system, introduced in 1980, was improved by an
automatic vacuum switch-off to avoid backfiring when closing
throttle.
No maintenance is required for this system.
Idle speed and idle mixture adjustment does not differ from the
1980 model procedure.
All 1981 model motorcycles are equipped with an electronic
ignition system without breaker points. Misadjustment by wear
and tear is impossible. Ignition timing must be checked, at
every BMW service interval, with a correct timing light, for
the check mark “F” (fully advance timing) at approximately
3500 RPM’s.
All 1981 models are designed to use regular, leaded or unleaded
gasoline.
