The pulse air system, introduced in 1980, was improved by an automatic vacuum switch-off to avoid backfiring when closing throttle. No maintenance is required for this system. Idle speed and idle mixture adjustment does not differ from the 1980 model procedure. All 1981 model motorcycles are equipped with an electronic ignition system without breaker points. Misadjustment by wear and tear is impossible. Ignition timing must be checked, at every BMW service interval, with a correct timing light, for the check mark “F” (fully advance timing) at approximately 3500 RPM’s. All 1981 models are designed to use regular, leaded or unleaded gasoline.
