Service-InformationM otorcycle Group: 34 BMW NA Brakes Service Department Disk Brake Squeal – All Models March, 1988 34 01-5 88 (2266) For USA Only In Service Information 34 010 86 (2220) we discussed the design and philosphy of the BMWBr ake System. Since writing that Service Information, we have investigated various chemicals and anti-squeal components. Although many products reduce the squeal significantly, none of them possess the qualities of safety and durability required for approval. We have evaluated a shim, used on BMWau tomobiles (part no. 32 21 1 116 006). If this part is installed in a caliper with new brake pads, insufficient expansion clearaRce may exist. If the motorcycle brake is applied aggressively or on a prolonged down-hill situation, expansion of the brake components due to heat buildup could cause brake system overheating and possible wheel lock-up. USE OF THIS PARTC ANC OMPROMISTEH E SAFETYA NDP ERFORMANCE OF THE BRAKINGS YSTEMA NDT HEREFORCE ANNOTB E APPROVED, The positive qualities of our brake pad materials far outweigh the negative effect of brake noise. We will, however, continue to research ways to reduce annoying brake noise.
