ALLOY EXHAUST NUT
Group 11 – Motor
At times a problem of galling exists between the exhaust threads
of the cylinder head and the threads of the exhaust flange nut.
In every instance the problem can be identified before extensive
damage is done to the threads of the cylinder head.
STOP: ….. as soon as you realize something is not right. It is
possible to correct the situation now without further and permanent
damage to the threads.
The exhaust pipes can be removed from the cylinder head with the
exhaust nut loosened as little as 1/4 turn. Remove the exhaust
system leaving the exhaust nut on the head.
The exhaust nut can now be removed by cutting a slot into the
exhaust nut, being careful not to cut into the cylinder head
threads. This is most easily done with a hacksaw or even just
a hacksaw blade wrapped with tape as a handhold.
Once the slot is cut, the remaining material can be split with a
chisel inserted into the slot.
Remove the split exhaust nut and proceed with cleaning and deburring
the cylinder head threads until a new exhaust nut can be
threaded on smoothly and easily.
When reinstalling the exhaust system, be sure to coat the threads
with an anti-seize compound.
