September 1991 31 025 91 (2479) For USA Only Leaking Front Fork Seals - All Models Condition: How Seal Leaks: Remedy: Important: Oil Capacities: Oil Fi 11 i ng Capacities: Fork seals can leak as a result of excessive internal pressure. After the compression stroke, a ring of oil may appear on the fork tube above the seal. Lift the dust cap and check the area above the seal. Wipe it dry if necessary. (On GS models lift up the fork gaiters). Then take the motorcycle for a test ride. If the amount of oil leakage increases to the extent that once again a ring appears and. the oil runs down and drips, i.e., the oil does not remain static, then the fork tube/seal is leaking excessively. Once the motorcycle has been secured in the crate in Berlin, the oil filler screw on each fork is briefly opened and then retightened to release any pressure generated during shipping. When a motorcycle is uncrated, the\oil filler screws should be unscrewed to release pressure and then tightened. Please be sure that the front wheel is off the ground (unloaded} when doing this. An excessive amount of oil in a fork tube will result in a higher pressure when compressed. Unequal levels on either side may cause unwanted tension and the f~o~t forks may be less responsive than normal. A distinction on the attached chirt is made between first time filling and refilling. When service work is being performed, the fork sliders cannot be drained completely. Oil Grades: On RJOOGmS odels there is actually a difference between the right and left fork tube volume. When performing repair work for which the forks are completely stripped (i.e., replacing fork seals), the first time filling capacity applies. Please use suitable measuring receptacles to ensure that the precise amounts are used. In addition to the fork oils recommended in Service Information bulletins and Riders Manuals, we are now able to recommend all-season "Essa Kemfort" fork oil for all models. This fork oil is available through normal parts channels using the fo 11 owing part numbers: ,-=i' 1000 ml 4000 ml 31 42 9 062 158 31 42 9 062 159 Very truly yours, BMWof North America, Inc.
