Removing/Repairing Exhaust Flange Nut – Boxer Models

Remedies!
Note:
The finned exhaust nut may become seized to the
cylinder head exhaust port threads.
Do not try to force the nut off if it is seized.
Never-Seize Paste should be applied at the 600-mi1e
service.
No. 1 :
Drill 3 or 4 holes approximately 4 rmi deep using a
6 rrm drill between one pair of fins.
Use a 3/4″ cold chfsel to split the metal between
the holes until the nut cracks.
Be careful not to damage the cylinder head
threads.
No. 2:
Using a hacksaw blade. saw between one pair of
fins.
Saw to a depth-of approximately 4 111n.
Be careful not to saw into the cy1 i nder head
threads.
Use a 3/4 11 cold chisel to sp1 it the remaining
meta 1.
By splitting the nut as described in No. 1 and No. 2
above, the pressure on the threads can be relaxed and
the nut can be removed and discarded.
In many cases, by using a thread file with a thread
pitch of 2.0, you can file any seizure marks or
galling from the threads.
Work a new flange nut onto the threads using a mixture
of 1 apping compound and Never-Seize unti 1 the nut
threads on smoothly, Removefl ange nut and clean both
threads completely.
Use a liberal amount of Never-Seize (Part No. 18 21 1
337 499} on the exhaust port threads, along with the
new flange nut.
