Group 12 – Engine Electric
Dear BMW Dealer:
Due to certain technical improvements on our latest models, the
following alterations have to be considered when servicing BMW
motorcycles:
Check dwell an?le (120ยฐ + 3%)
every 7500 km 5000 miles):
disconnect the battery, remove
the 3 Alleยทn screws (5mm) and
take off the generator cover.
Remove contact breaker housing
cover by loosening slotted head
screw. Unscrew the spark plugs
and turn the engine clockwise,
looking from the front, by means
of the Allen screw (6mm) holding
the alternator rotor. Continue
turning until the breaker arm
lifts off fully. To replace
burnt breaker points, dismount
front bearing shield of breaker
points camshaft. Before meas~ring
dwell angle, mount it again. If
no dwell angle meter is available,
measure breaker points gap with a
feeler gauge (0. 45nun ยฑ 0. 05mm). To
adjust the breaker points gap, loosen
the set screw slightly, insert a
screwdriver blade into the slot on
the braker plate and t::urn the screwdriver
slightly until a gap of
0.45mm + 0.05mm.
1
(0.018 in+ 0 .002 in) is obtainedJ
Tighten the set screw and check
that the gap has not altered.
Fig. 1. Apply a small quantity
of high temperature point cam
grease on the point rubbing block
every 15000 km (10000 miles), and
check that the block is resting
correctly on the cam.
