RE: Adjusting Procedure in the Event of Uneven Idling
Dear Dealer:
If comolaints are received of motorcycles idling unevenly,
the recornrnended 9rocedure is as follows:
1. Adjust valve clearances with engine cold (20°C/68°F)
_/ Above 1000 km< I / Up to 1000 km (app. 600 miles) (app. 600 miles) ~ Inlet Exhaust Inlet Exhaust R80G/S - Rl00RT R65 0.15 mm 0.20 mm {0.006 in) {0.008 in) 0.15 mm (0.006 in) 0.25 mm (0.010 in) 0.10 mm (0.004 in) 0.10 mm (0.004 in) 0.15 mm (0.006 i 0.20 mm 10 .o~ Warning: Do not set valve clearances too closely to the lower tolerance limits. 2. Time the ignition as described in the Repair Manual, Group 12. For TSZ (transistorized coil ignition), use the instructions in the RS0G/5 Repair Manual. Note also.our instructions in Service Information 12 005 82. 3. Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature (oil at app. 80°C/176°F). 4. Adjust carburetors in accordance with Group 13 of the Repair Manual. If idling is still unsatisfactory after all these adjustments have been performed correctly, proceed as follows: 1. Unscrew and remove the idle jet and check that the rubber sealing ring is undamaged. Renew if necessary and screw the jet back in, using suitable lubrication. 2. Check for stray air leaks anywhere on the intake system. Any such air will have the effect of weakening the mixture on that side of the engine. Please route and initial before filing ( ( -2- If these measures also fail to effect a remedy, take off the cylinder heads and check for blow-by past the valves (fuel test in exhaust and inlet tracts). If necessary, regrind the valves or machine the valve seats. Warning: to avoid discolored exhaust pipes on new motorcycles during engine adjustment work, the engine must not be run with the motorcycle at a standstill for more than 10 minutes.
