RE: ENGIN1′ IDENTIFIC.Z\TION NUMBERS
Dear Dealer:
We have decided to no longer match the engine
number with the frame or 17 digit V.I.N. numbers.
Each engine is now stamped on a machined surface
on the crankcase. This surface is located on
the forward lower left side of the engine, below
the exhaust pipe and frame tubing.
The stampings are on two levels.
The first: the unique engine sequenceยท _nu111_bers, identifying
model year, week of productionยท:ยทand- the
sequence number. โข
The second: A requirement by E.P.A. (Environmental
Protection Agency) designated as required.
All identification numbers on themOtorcycie,’i.e.
V. I. N. , engine number, transmission: number and key
numbers for each motorcycle produced are recorded in
our data processing equipment in our Factory.
Therefore, it is possible to assist law enforcement
agencies or the National Automobile Theft Burea~
for theft inquiries only. The VIN numbers must be known
to coordinate all numbers upon request.
To further assist your customer, upon purchase enter
into his Rider’s Manual on the appropriate page all
identification numbers including engine and key number
for future references.
Yours truly,
Richard Dampf
